Amsterdam area becomes climate and cost neutral

The necessity for sustainable construction practices is evident. The sector is one of the worst polluters, while office buildings and homes consume tremendous amounts of energy. Under the CO-GREEN flag, housing corporation Eigen Haard, ERA Contour, KOW Architectuur and Oranje B.V. drew up a plan to demolish and rebuild the Amsterdam area of Overtoomse Veld/Middengebied Zuid in climate neutral and cost neutral ways. Squarewise helped create innovative collaboration between parties in which transparency and joint responsibility were key.

By working closely together, a reduction in failure costs, common in construction, can be achieved. This creates a margin with which climate neutral techniques can be covered. The parties determined a set of common goals and transformed them into ambitious yet feasible performance indicators. A balanced budget was jointly and transparently calculated and together, the parties laid down ground rules for communicating with one another and with present and future project parties.

To underline their aspirations, the parties also committed financially to the ambitions set. To this end, Squarewise developed the Dynamic Distribution Model, which relates the profit margin to the degree of substantial success achieved. The margin expands in the case of maximum success or minimum failure costs, but can also be used should construction costs turn out to be higher than expected. This way, the pain and the gain can be spread evenly among parties.
